Identifying the problemMost children with autism have some kind of visual problem that results from being on the autism spectrum.Common indications for visual difficulties include: - Lack of eye contact
- Staring at objects, especially spinning items such as wheels
- Momentary peripheral glances
- Side viewing
- Scanning objects quickly
- Difficulty maintaining visual contact with an object or person
- Crossed eyes
- Eye movement abnormalities
TipOne easy way for parents to determine if their child is having visual processing problems is to observe how she watches television. Does she press her face sideways to the screen and rotate her eyes around looking for a better angle? If so, an eye exam is in order.
