Did anyone else happen to catch the DR.Phil show on friday 3-11-05 about ADD & ADHD ? While all of the information talked about was stuff that I learned in behaviorol modification class, I really liked Dr. Phil's way of explaining 2 major points. The first deals with- possitive reinforcement- (possitive) not nessecarly a good thing but something that increases the likelyhood of a behavior (good or bad) <<< that was the way the class explained it. Dr. Phil gave this example using a situation of a child resisting going to bed. the child cries about going to bed, the parent doesn't give in, the child cries screams and hits, the parent doesnt give in, the child wets himself verbally threatens parent or has a coughing attack, the parent says ok fine stay up! The last behavior before the pay off was reinforced. The father then replied with one of my favorite sayings " well you pick your battles" but how do you know which battles are critical and which arnt worth fighting? Dr.Phil replied " thats right you do pick your battle's and thats fine whats important is that the ones you pick to battle you never loose." For example if your child is writing on the walls and you dont feel like dealing with it, don't see it! but if you see it and start the battle, you must prevail. Otherwise your teaching the child that he is in control.
