Hi,
I'm a substitute resource teacher and have recently started 1 hour sessions with a 5 yr old autistic boy. Generally at the beginning (first 10 mins) of the session he will do the work quiet well.
However, once the first task e.g. phonics worksheet is completed and a new book or exercise is placed in front of him he will begin to say he doesn't want to do it and this will lead onto him 'wanting to go to sleep' and no matter how I try to re direct him (perhaps by offering to help him) the behavior always escalates to him throwing himself on the floor, banging the walls, trying to run out of the room, crying with his hands over his eyes or ears and screaming 'i hate you' etc.
I have 3 years experience in this field and have come across many forms of negative behavior and have always been able to manipulate or defuse the situation with a little perseverance, ingenuity and imagination. However in this case I am at a loss.
I have done my research and read your posts about modifying behavior, but these are all aimed at the parents. This is of course understandable as teachers in my position should have a good knowledge of what to do, however I am only a sub teacher and therefore don't have the background information I need. So I thought who better to ask than the parents and members of this site...
During my sessions I don't feel I have the option to 'ride out' the episode or ignore the behavior as I am teaching 1 on 1. I have brought in a wide assortment of interesting toys, jigsaws etc with a view to distraction but he doesn't like any of them. I have tried to get him to tell me his interests and likes but he always responds with 'i hate that'. I tried being stern, using a quiet and calming voice, asking him to 'use his words' instead of screaming, placing him in a quiet place, bring him for a walk around the school to calm down. Am I confusing him by trying different methods?
I really am at a complete loss here, any help or references you could give me would be a God send.
