Hi, I can relate to what you are going through your not alone. I had this same problem with my son, but at a younger age. Specialists have tried to classify my son under a new label every year; we went from mildly mental ill to developmentally delayed to mentally retarded; these labels were very hard to accept and I didn’t. My son has been through a vast amount of testing; we finally found a pediatric specialist and found that our son seems to fit better in the PDD category (I think he fits better in the absolutely lovable and amazing category). My advice to you is as a mother only you know best. If you disagree with your evaluator find someone else who is more familiar with your child’s issues. Not all people with autism have the same types of signs (my doctor refers to these as red flags). There are different variations or categories. Number two you have to be your child’s advocate if you do not fight for your child’s rights no one else will. Do not stop until you are satisfied. As far as the remarks from your evaluator blaming you. NO, this is not happening to you because you were a young mother. I too, was a young mother and all of the specialists that I work with encourage me to find any way of helping my child; you need to do the same. Next tell your school that your son goes to that you would like to have a copy of your Parental Rights every school should have a set. Read these word for word they can help. I want to encourage you to not stop until you find someone to listen to your theory, as mothers we know our children best and they deserve the best and nothing less. Hope I could help or least give you some encouragement. Luck!!!

Thanks very much, this did help knowing Im not the only one to push the issue with everyone. I do know my child and disagree with his last testing and Im already setup for another. My thing is that we as parents have to through so many hoops with these doctors and it shouldnt have to be that way. I will keep fighting untill Im satisfied what ever the diaginoses is as long as I agree, becuse know my child and the doctors dont. Thanks guest you really lifted my spriits today.

Hi my son is 3 yrs 8 mo and in Dec he was dx with aspergers since then he has been recently dx with PDDNOS by a develpmental pediatrician in Dallas, Tx I reccomend that you get as many opinions as you feel comfortable with becasue no one knows your child like you do Autism is something that even dr know little about and you will find that you have to really stand out and be an advocate and let people know about it. Stand up for your child and get him as much help as you can I know that at times it feels like I am going against a brick wall right now I am trying to find a neurologist that accepts medicaid because any kind of speicalist is so expensive. Also I need a good support group I am considering starting one in my town because there is nothing here. I know that without the Lord I would not be able to do this. I am open to anyone who wants to support and keep in touch email Lakesidejen2336@wmconnect.com
