I am new to this group and am very much in need of company like me, a mom with a child with PDD / autism - who has other kids and is trying to deal with all that goes with this disorder. My son is 3 1/2 and has made great progress but is still not typical and may not ever be. I am trying to potty train and this is very hard - he is not aware of his body and has apraxia, which causes motor planning to be messed up. He is wonderful, but he is much harder to raise than my other boys. Just need a friend who has been there or is there. thanks.

Hey there! I am Lisa and the mother of eight year old twins, one of whom has been diagnosed with autism. I also had a hard time with the potty training, it took forever but I just kept trying and trying and one day he just went all by himself! It was like he just decided he was ready. Now when I say forever I mean a couple of years but it happened eventually so don't be discouraged. I was wondering if you have a hard time with your other children being jealous of the attention the child with autism requires? I sure do! I try to divide my attention but sometimes my son just needs more. Anyway, don't give up, the potty training will come in time!

Hello,
I understand what you are going through. I am a mother of a wonderful eight year old boy who also has PDD and I too have other boys. Potty training is hard, but like someone else said hang in there it will eventually happen. Remember your son may take longer to learn to do things, but those accomplishments are just that more sweeter when they come. Most importantly remember that you are sticking by your son and you love him unconditionally and a families love and support can help a child accomplish anything. I know this best of all; if you believe in your son he can do anything. Lastly remember you are a mother not a robot you can not do everything on your own ask for help take a day off . I know I give this advice and unfortunately I haven't followed it very well my self, but I am learning . All mothers work hard to give the best we can give to our children, but we deserve a break too. I check this site often if you need any thing else we can communicate thought here. Good Luck !

Dear Mamao3boys,
I'm an unemployed dad/househusband with a son with PDD-NOS. Sam is 7 years old now, and only now is he beginning to really use the potty.
Co-ordinating with his teachers, I make sure and use the same language as they do. He never really knew what a "potty" was, now he calls it "baf-room." So, I use the term bathroom. That helped.
Also, to get the ball rolling, I started stripping off all his clothes the minute he got home from school. Sounds weird, I know, but I guess he decided he'd rather go in the toilet than on a chair or the floor!
He still has accidents, all the time. But he also goes by himself a lot without even saying anything to me about it - no help needed. He has a hard time wiping, so you have to keep an eye on him, but things are much better than before.
I don't know if it will help or not at your boy's age, but you might try the "nudist camp" mentality. It helped me.

Dear Mama,
Iam a mother of 6 year old boy who is autistic who is not fully trained but can pee by himself in tiolet. I started by taking to the bathroom every 30 minutes in the beginning and evcen if he used to pee al drop I used to reward with a candy which he likes the most and I used it only reserve it for the bathroom trip(be very firm on candy). I never used the pullups and I put him on underwears at home all the times. If he had an accident dont be mad at him take him to the bathroom make him sit on the potty and tell him to pee. If he is going to school ask the school to coordinate with you, Because my son school has been a great help to me. And most of all have a lot of patience and dont be hard on you, it will take time, it has taken two years for me, but I faith in him and I love him a lot. Hope this can be of some help to you. Good Luck.
Take care.
