I just found this group... long story..super short. We have two boys...5 yrs old with Down Syndrome and 3 yrs old with Autism. My 3 yr old was dx at 2 yrs..with ASD..at the time..he was very quiet...non verbal..wouldnt look at you etc. We took him off milk..and saw a huge difference...his eye contact...his interaction...etc. He is in preschool and has words he says..but still mostly non verbal..hard to communicate with His meltowns have been worse..and for the life of me..I cant figure out what the heck is causing them.... we may be in the same room...doing the same thing..or he could just be playing with his cars..and all of a sudden...he will run screaming...no noise change/...light change...nothing.. they are getting worse...and Im afraid so is my frustration level. Ive read all the things..distraction....positive re in forcement etc...nothing....works.. He will just run and scream..loudly at the top of his lungs...and then it starts.... I am so at my wits end..I dont think its fair to my 5 year old either..because I feel all my attention is on the 3 yr old... i dont know what to do.

my son was diagnosed as a higher functioning autistic. and when he has a meltdown his therapist told us to send him to a quiet room with few distractions and give him a period to gain his wits back. it works most of the time.

My son (he's 4) is the same way!
I've heard from mothers of autistic teens that the younger years(1-5 or 6) are the worst! So we have to hang in there a lil longer. Supposedly they calm a bit as they get older.
Normally put the boy in a room with a blanket he can hide under if he needs to.

my son would have melt down to, he is going to be 10 in november. he doesnt have them as much as he used to but when he did I would send him to his room till he calmed down or I would have head phones that he could put on and that also seemed to calm him down. I am just now taking him completely off of milk and gluten free. it will be a week this fri that I have done it and me and my husband are starting to see a difference in him. he is more talkative and doesnt have as many anxioty attacks. good luck
